A Conical-shaped Ice Cream Scooper from 1914

Gilchrist Ice Cream Scoop No. 33

This is a No.33 Gilchrist Automatic Ice Cream Disher made of nickle plated brass with a wooden handle. It is one of the rare ‘conical bowl’ types, produced in 1914. This company was owned and operated by Raymond B. Gilchrist,   born in New Jersey around 1866, and married around 1881 to his Canadian-born wife Agnes.  He owned his own business, The Gilchrist Co. in Newark, New Jersey  from 1902 until 1926 and manufactured hardware specialty items such as Ice Cream Scoops, cork pullers and ice picks used in soda fountain shops during that era.

Soda Fountains and Malt Shops used this item, a history of which you may read here.

The release mechanism on this device is quite a marvel and adds even more enjoyment to the sharing of ice cream. Just imagine your grandparents slipping away on a Sunday to go for a date to the counter at the drug store or ice cream parlour and sharing a tasty treat prepared with this fancy contraption!
